Polar Bear Food
Polar Bear Food – Vegetation
Since the polar bears mainly inhabit more or less totally barren lands there are not much vegetation for them to eat. Berries, roots and kelps are what are available and the polar bear will swiftly gobble it down when it comes upon it. Otherwise the polar bear is a carnivore, not because it chooses to be, but because it does not have any other option in order to survive. In zoos polar bears could easily be feed with vegetation only, but most zoos prefers to give the polar bears their natural diet in order to keep them happy and healthy.
Polar Bear Food – Animal
The polar bear is the most carnivorous bear on the planet simply because there is not much else to eat within the range of their natural habitat. Because of this none of the ordinary rules about bear encounters counts when it comes to polar bears, if a polar bear is coming in your direction it is after your meat and nothing else. Luckily humans are not the polar bears favourite dinner but instead a whole lot of fish and seals need to give up their lives to satisfy the polar bear. That does not mean that the polar bears are picky, they will eat anything they can get their paws on, including birds, rodents, shellfish, crabs, beluga whales, young walruses and occasionally musk oxen or reindeer. Sometimes, when food is scarce, they even turn on each other for food.
Polar Bear Food – And what else?
Now one might think that there is nothing else for the polar bear to eat out on the frozen tundra, but that is incorrect. Even humans living at those latitudes throw out trash and as most other bears the polar bears are extremely drawn to the possibility of raiding human trashcans a little now and then for a little snack. The garbage dump in Churchill, Manitoba is known for its polar bear visits and as it seems the polar bears are not really picky about what they eat, including car tires and motor oil. |
