Polar Bear Behaviour

Polar Bear Behaviour – Hunting

The polar bear is a natural predator within its natural habitat and will feast upon anything that comes close enough and appears to be worth the effort. One might think that the polar bear is lazy since it never tends to pursuit its prey but this is simply because the polar bear never uses any energy in vain. That kind of thinking is needed in an environment as in the habitat of the polar bear, if not succeed do not pursuit. Instead the polar bear use ambushes, surprise attacks and even stealth to get hold of their prey. The polar bear might look it but it is one of the sneakiest bears alive able to tricking seals into believing they are safe although they are not.

Polar Bear Behaviour – Breeding

The polar bears mate in the spring and will only pair up for this event, although some few permanent bonds have been observed the norm is that the polar bear lives on its own. Since the polar bear does not hibernate at all the pregnancy is much longer than most other bears and the cubs are born in the early winter. The actual birth usually takes place within a two-chamber cave which the polar bear mother has dug in the deep snow. For the first one and a half months the polar bear cubs are completely helpless and will stay within the den together with their mother which will be in a dormant state. Over the next couple of years the female polar bear will then learn the cubs, usually two, everything about being a real polar bear and protect them from all sorts of danger including other polar bears which are known to think of cubs as alternate food source.
